Autumn's Grace
No spring, nor summer beauty hath such grace
As I have seen in one autumnal face.
-- John Donne
Delicious autumn!  My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird
I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.
-- George Eliot
Listen! the wind is rising and the air is wild with leaves,
We have had our summer evenings, now for October eves!
-- Humbert Wolfe
Once more the liberal year laughs out o'er richer stores than gems or gold;
Once more with harvest song and shout is nature's boldest triumph told.
-- John Greenleaf Whittier
'Tis pleasant on a fine spring morn to see the buds expand,
'Tis pleasant in the summer time to see the fruitful land;
'Tis pleasant on a winter's night to sit around the blaze,
But what are joys like these, my friends, to merry autumn days!
-- Charles Dickens
The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their
energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of autumn.
-- John Greenleaf Whittier
Come, said the wind to the leaves one day,
Come to the meadows and we will play;
Put on your dresses, scarlet and gold,
For summer is gone and the days grow cold.
-- Children's Song of the 1800's
A few days ago I walked along the edge of the lake and was treated to the crunch
and rustle of leaves with each step I made.  The acoustics of this season are
different and all sounds, no matter how hushed, are as crisp as autumn air.
-- Eric Sloane
For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together.
For nature, it's a time of sowing, of scattering abroad.
-- Edwin Teale
