Can't hear the music? The music pages on this site have been tested with an Explorer browser and are in proper working order. I use a standard embedding format that should work effectively with both Netscape and Microsoft Explorer browsers and generic plug-ins. If you cannot hear the music playing in the background of the pages, the problem is probably with your computer and the following are steps you can take to help in finding a solution: First, check the volume control on your computer or your speakers to be sure you have the volume turned up high enough and the no mute boxes are checked. If you can hear the music playing in the background sometimes, but not always, perhaps you’ve exhausted the memory required for a large midi file---this may be because your system's memory or browser cache has reached its capacity; so try re-booting your computer to see if that corrects the problem. This could be a problem with RAM memory, or "temporary" memory of your computer, not the amount required for stored files, and can be influenced by many things, including how often you empty your recycle bin or how often you delete the accumulated files in your Temporary Files cache. Also, in how large your RAM memory is to begin with and how much you surf the net or work with photos, etc. on your computer. I use standard MIDI files for background music, unless otherwise specified. Be sure your browser is equipped with the proper "plug-in's" in order to enjoy them. The music on the site should play with the standard midi plug-ins that are typically downloaded as part of your browswer package. But if you are unsure whether or not you have an appropriate plugin, you can always reload or upgrade your browser software (such as Netscape or Microsoft Explorer), and then reboot your computer and try the music pages again. Or you could elect to download the free Quick Time plugin (at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ ) for this purpose. (But, please note that my format does not specifically require the Quicktime plugin.) Even if you have installed the proper plugin in the past, it is possible that some other software program may have inadvertently been added to your system that is now causing a conflict with the original plugin. If that is the problem, it can usually be resolved by reloading your browser software; if that doesn't work, then reload the free Quick Time plug in. There is a difference between MIDI files and WAV files. This could be important, especially to Windows XP users, as both types have their own volume control in XP (and possibly others). Go to your system tray (lower right-hand corner, next to clock) and double click your speaker icon. A volume control interface will come up. Make sure that you have your Wave, MIDI (on my computer it says "SW Synth", yours may be different) and CD audio all turned up...and that "Mute" is unchecked. But, wait---there are still more options on your computer's Control Panel---for more detailed information about re-setting the Sound and Audio devices on your computer, visit: http://www.askdavetaylor.com/why_dont_i_hear_music_from_windows_media_player.html where you will find easy step-by-step directions. If all of the above steps fail to solve the problem, it may be time to call on the help of a computer technician to find the solution to your problem.
