Old New Orleans

The Past Whispers - Home
At a Senate hearing held to determine the status of New Orleans' recovery more than a year after Katrina, an activist--a woman from Lakeview--told the following story:

Many volunteers have come to the city to assist in the monumental recovery efforts.  Two of these volunteers were a lady from Boston and her 9-year-old daughter.  They'd been working in Lakeview for about a week when one day the daughter looked up at her mother and asked, "Mommy, when are we going back to America?"  At this point she had to stop for a moment to compose herself and then, in a cracking voice, she completed her opening statement, "My question is the same.
When can we return home to America?"
