If I am tempted to repeat a tale someone to me has told About another, let it pass, before I speak, three gates of gold. These narrow gates: First, is it true? Then, is it needful? In my mind Give truthful answer, and the next is last and narrowest, Is it kind? And if, to reach my lips at last, it passes through these gateways, three, Then I may tell the tale, and fear not what the result may be. -- Beth Day

Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. It is bad for the mind to continually be a part of unanimity. -- Charles Marley

With much appreciation to my friend and e-buddy, Poldi, who shared some photographs of her ancestors' homeland with me. She'd received them from her cousin and fellow family researcher, Lea, who lives in Slovenia...and who is, also, a subscriber to Friday's Journal. I wrote back right away and asked if I might place the photos on a Journal page and she kindly said yes. I told her that I sometimes spent a whole day searching for photos as beautiful as these to use on Friday's Journal and these had shown up unsolicited in my inbox...a lucky day for me! Slovenia (formerly part of the republic of Yugoslavia) is south of Austria, east of Italy, north of Croatia and a portion of it borders the Adriatic Sea to the southwest. Poldi said that it's referred to as "the sunny side of the Alps." What she didn't have to say is that the landscapes are incredibly beautiful...the pictures speak for themselves. I've added a few more photos of Slovenia I found on Flickr, as well. I hope you enjoy these as much as I have. Thank you Lea and Poldi. Nancy

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant, they, too, have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is, many persons strive for high ideals and everywhere life is full of heroism. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And, whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labours and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. -- Max Ehrmann
