Beauty in the Rain

If you fancy that you have
an eye for beauty,
test it on a rainy day.......
a cold and foggy day
that wears no make-up.
Test it in the shades of gray
that consume the sun
and rob the flowers of their colors,
leaving them forlorn in dingy places
like tired and aging ballerinas
in faded dancing clothes;
huddling in the drafty wings
of empty opera houses.

Gaze across the rooftops
and the chimneys,
painted like Utrillo's Paris
on the canvas of the smoke and fog
of a dying afternoon in winter.

It takes no eye for beauty
to find it on a lovely day.
It thrusts itself upon you
in the sunshine
and the warm.

But it hides;
becomes aloof, elusive
in the cold and in the rain.

In Some Quiet Place
Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.  -- John Ruskin
Birds sing after a storm; why shouldn't people feel as free to
delight in whatever remains to them?  -- Rose Kennedy
Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops.
Let the rain sing you a lullaby.  -- Langston Hughes
Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Rain is grace; rain is the sky condescending to the earth;
without rain, there would be no life.  -- John Updike
People are like stained glass windows; they sparkle and shine when the sun's out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is light within.
-- Elizabeth Kubler-Ross
And these words of wisdom from my 3 year old granddaughter, Sarah:
When you get a rainy day, you should always run through the puddles.  Nancy
