Easter Traditions
of Europe
Easter customs vary around the world.  The pictures on this
page represent some of the customs of European countries,
such as Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Ukraine,
Sweden, Latvia, Poland, Italy, Switzerland and Germany.  As
shown above and below, in photos from Germany, Latvia,
Czech Republic and Austria, it's a custom in some
countries to decorate outdoor trees with Easter eggs.
Several countries in Eastern Europe are famous for the art of beautifully and
intricately designed egg decoration.  The eggs below are from Ukraine, Poland,
Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Lithuania.  Symbols, designs and techniques can vary
within a country, following regional lines.  The tradition goes back to pre-Christian
Eastern Europe and the technique has been passed down from one generation to
the next, usually from mother to daughter.  In one method, eggs are decorated using
a wax removal method.  The designs are drawn onto the egg using a special stylus.
The eggs are then dyed and the wax is melted away, leaving the design to show
through the dye.  Most of the designs below have been created in that way.
The photos below are from Sweden, where brightly colored
feathers take the place of eggs in Easter decorations.
Below are Easter and Passover foods from the Ukraine, Poland, Italy,
Czek Republic, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
