Kentucky Morning
I'd intended to devote a page to Kentucky right after the University of Kentucky won the
NCAA Men's Basketball Championship but, as often happens, I got sidetracked.  Now,
since it's almost time for the Kentucky Derby, I offer this page in honor of both that
esteemed race and the Kentucky Wildcats, the winningest team in college basketball
history.  (Though it hurts the feelings of an LSU fan to admit such a thing.
:-)
Photos on this page were all taken in the beautiful Commonwealth of Kentucky.
History has demonstrated that the most notable winners usually encountered
heartbreaking obstacles before they triumphed.  They won because they
refused to become discouraged by their defeats.

The person who wins may have been counted out several times, but
he didn't hear the referee.

If anything goes bad, I did it; if anything goes semi-good, we did it; if anything goes
really good, then you did it.  That's all it takes to get people to win games for you.
-- Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant

Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.
-- Coach John Wooden
Most people give up just when they're about to achieve success.  They quit on the one yard line.
They give up at the last minute of the game one foot from a winning touchdown.

Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the
obstacles which he has overcome.

It's not about getting knocked down, it's about whether you get back up.  -- Coach Vince Lombardi

My motto was always to keep swinging.  Whether I was in a slump or feeling badly or having
trouble off the field, the only thing I knew to do was just keep swinging.

I've made so many mistakes that if I don't make the same mistakes twice, we'll have
a pretty good chance of winning.
-- Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant

We're in a slump.  We can't win at home.  We can't win on the road.  I just can't
figure out where else to play.
-- Pat Williamsger
When I thought I couldn't go on, I forced myself to keep going.  My success is based
on persistence more than anything else.

Beyond talent lie all the usual words: discipline, luck, etc. -- but, most of all,
endurance.
-- James Baldwin
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the esteem of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty and to find the best in others; to leave the world
a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one
life has breathed easier because you have lived.  This is to have lived a successful life.
