In the late 1800's, crowds used to gather on Canal Street on Christmas Eve
with noisemakers of every description.  This created a festive atmosphere, but
not a place for anyone with jangled nerves.  Above, in front of Maison Blanche
department store, about 1899; below, Canal Street - the mega-horn in the
background must've been someone's idea of the ultimate noisemaker.
