And ye who have met with Adversity's blast, and been bow'd to the earth by its fury;
To whom the Twelve Months that have recently pass'd were as harsh as a prejudiced jury...
Still, look to the future! and join in our chime, the regrets of remembrance to cozen,
And, having obtained a New Trial of Time, shout in hopes of a kindlier dozen.
-- Thomas Hood, 1799 - 1845

An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in.
A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.

Last year's words belong to last year's language and next year's words await
another voice.  To make an end is to make a beginning.

I am your next chance at the art of living.  I am your opportunity to practice what you have
learned about life during the last twelve months.  All that you sought and didn't find is hidden
in me, waiting for you to search, but with more determination.  All that you dreamed, but didn't
do, all that you hoped, but didn't will, all faith that you claimed, but didn't demonstrate...these
slumber lightly, waiting to be awakened by the touch of a strong purpose.

Recipe for the New Year

Take twelve months; see that they are free from old memories of bitterness, prejudice or hate; pick
off all specks of pettiness; see that they are freed from all past grievances.  Have them fresh and
clean as when they first came from the storehouse of Time.  Into each day, put equal parts of
courage, patience, hope, faith, work, fidelity, liberality, kindness, rest and reflection.  Put in about
one teaspoonful of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of play and a heaping
cupful of good humor.  Mix well, bake lightly, serve warm.  Important:  Cut these months into thirty or
thirty-one equal parts.  Do not attempt to make up the whole batch at once (so many persons spoil
the entire lot this way).  Prepare only one day at a time!
