No life can be barren which hears the whisper of the wind in the woods
or the voice of the sea as it breaks on the shore.
-- William Winter
The photographs on this page are from Norway.  Someone once said
that Norway - with its steep mountains, deep fjords, colorful houses and
translucent, almost iridescent, light - isn't merely beautiful, it's intensely
and remarkably beautiful.  These pictures make it difficult to disagree.
Only in quiet waters do things mirror themselves undistorted.  Only
with a quiet mind do we see things as they really are.
-- Hans Margolius

The great omission in our lives is solitude, that zone of time and space, free
from outside pressures, which is the incubator of the spirit.
-- Marya Mannes
Unplug your iPod and listen to the crickets.  -- Alexander McFarland

Soon silence will have passed into legend.  We have turned our backs
on silence.  Day after day, we invent machines and devices that increase
noise and distract humanity from contemplation, from the essence of life.
Tooting, booming, howling, screeching, crashing, whistling, trilling
and beeping seem to bolster our egos.
-- Jean Arp
In the attitude of silence, the soul finds the path in a clearer light, and what is
elusive and deceptive resolves itself into crystal clearness.
-- Mahatma Gandhi

Our forefathers had civilization inside themselves, the wild outside.  We live
in the civilization they created, but the wilderness still lingers.  What they
dreamed, we live; what they lived, we dream.
-- George Moore
Her hearing was keener than his, and she heard silences of
which he was completely unaware.
-- D. M. Thomas

In the silence of the mountains, it's possible to hear the
whispers of eternity.
-- Henry David Thoreau
I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles.  -- Anne Frank

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings.  Nature's peace will flow
into you; the winds will blow their freshness into you; the storms their
energy.  Cares will drop off like autumn leaves.
-- John Muir
