Searching for Winter
I was born on the first day of summer and I've appreciated warm weather ever
since.  I'm more grateful than I can say that I came into the world in a city that's
located in a semi-tropical zone and that I've managed to remain in that zone.
We usually do have a winter, of sorts, at least cold enough to recognize the
season - not like this winter, when most of December hovered at 75 degrees.
I never thought I'd say this, but I found myself missing winter (just a little bit).
I didn't have a chance to wear my favorite holiday sweater this year and hot
cocoa doesn't bring the same enjoyment when the air conditioning's on.
Since winter hasn't found us, I went in search of it and was relieved to learn
that winter's alive and well in many places, as the pictures on this page
illustrate.  However, as beautiful as the snowy scenery is, by the time I'd
finished collecting these photos, I'd come to my senses.
Cocoa's not so bad if you turn the air conditioning down low enough
and holiday sweaters are way over-rated.  -- Nancy

Into my heart's treasury I slipped a coin
That time cannot rust, nor a thief purloin;
Better than the minting of a gold-crowned king
Is the safe-kept memory of a lovely thing.

Gather well your memories,
Store them against tomorrow;
There may be a time when the song is gone,
And their joy you'll need to borrow.

Life has loveliness to sell,
  All beautiful and splendid things,
Blue waves whitened on a cliff,
  Soaring fire that sways and sings,
And children's faces looking up
Holding wonder like a cup.

Spend all you have for loveliness,
  Buy it and never count the cost;
For one white singing hour of peace
  Count many a year of strife well lost,
And for a breath of ecstasy
Give all you have been, or could be.
