ANSWERS (As of 2017, when this page was created) Question 1: Most people believe that the first Thanksgiving celebration ever held in what is now the U.S. was the famous Pilgrim feast at Plymouth Colony in 1621. But...maybe not? Texas: In 1541, Spanish explorer, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, held a thanksgiving celebration with the people he called "Tejas" (members of the Hasinai group of Caddo- speaking Native Americans), in what is now Texas. Florida: Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1565, in what is today St. Augustine, Florida, when Spanish Admiral Pedro Menendez de Aviles and his men shared a harvest feast with members of the Timucuan tribe. Virginia: The first permanent English settlement of Jamestown, Virginia held a service of thanksgiving in 1610. Massachusetts: In 1621, the Pilgrims and Adventurers at Plymouth Colony invited members of the Wampanoag tribe to share a feast of Thanksgiving in Plymouth, MA. Question 2: Illinois: 95% of the U.S. pumpkin crop is grown in Illinois (pumpkins intended for processing). Over 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins are produced each year in the U.S. Question 3: Abraham Lincoln: Although Thanksgiving celebrations had been popular since Colonial times, especially in New England, Thanksgiving wasn't declared an official federal holiday until President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation in 1863. Question 4: Harry Truman: During the 1947 Thaksgiving season, the National Turkey Federation presented a live turkey to President Harry Truman, who promptly "pardoned" it, starting a tradition.
