The Things That Are
When I chose the location for this page's destination, I was desperately seeking
sunshine.  It's been raining in my part of the world for about 3 weeks now.
One day, we had a very short respite and a strange, shining ball briefly
appeared in the sky.  I spent a moment or two trying to figure out what it
might be before I remembered my old friend, the sun.  I'm so (so!) ready
for a whole day without precipitation.
To reacquaint myself with sunshine, I went on a cyber tour of the gloriously
sunny Greek Islands and the photos on this page are the result of that trip.
The title of the page comes from a quote by Henry Ward Beecher:  "Start with
a fresh page.  Take an interest in the things that are and are to be and
not in the things that were."
-- Nancy
Most of the pictures on this page were taken on the beautiful
(and sun-filled) Greek islands of Santorini, Mykonos and Crete.
Last year's words belong to last year's language.
And next year's words await another voice.
To make an end is to make a beginning.
-- T.S. Eliot
The year's end is neither an end nor a beginning, but a going on,
with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us.
-- Hal Borland
In this new year . . .
I will seek elegance, rather than luxury,
I will seek to be worthy, rather than to be popular,
I will seek to be wealthy, rather than to be rich,
I will think quietly, talk gently, act frankly.
I will listen to stars and birds . . .
And to children and sages . . . with an open heart.
I will allow the spiritual to come through the common.
-- William Ellery Channing
Ring happy bells across the snow, the old year is going:  let it go.
-- Lord Tennyson
An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in.  A
pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.
-- Bill Vaughan
Ye who have met with adversity's blast, and been bow'd to the earth by its fury;
To whom the twelve months that have recently passed were as harsh as a prejudiced jury:
Still, look to the future! and join in our chime, the regrets of remembrance to cozen,
And, having obtained a New Trial of Time, shout in hopes of a kindlier dozen.
-- Thomas Hood
"It's been a pleasure to be of service," Old Year says.  Then, with a courtly bow, he
says goodbye and the New Year settles in to visit for awhile.
-- Terri Guillemets
Cheers to a new year...and another chance for us to get it right!
-- Oprah Winfrey
