Photos above & below, Prayer Flags strung along mountain peaks in Tibet. The flags are a tradition generally found only among Tibetan Buddhists and contain messages filled with peace, hope, compassion, strength and wisdom. It's hoped that the words will be blown about by the wind and the good will and compassion of the messages will benefit all people. Just as life moves on and is replaced by new life, the Tibetans renew their hopes for the world by continually mounting new flags alongside the old. |
It is the history of our kindnesses that alone make the world tolerable. If it were not for the effect of kindnesses, multiplying, spreading and bringing forth benefits a thousand fold, I should be tempted to think that our life is a practical joke in the worst possible spirit. -- Robert Louis Stevenson |

The crest of one distinguished family reads simply, "I serve," and no better motto can be found. We cannot determine whether our faces shall be beautiful or ugly, our bodies graceful or deformed. But the shaping of our lives is in our own hands. We make that great or small, noble or mean, as we will. -- George Henry Hubbard |
Compassion is a necessity, not a luxury. Without it, humanity cannot survive. -- H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama |
Tibet has the distinction of being the highest region on earth. It sits atop the Qinghai-Tibet plateau, and boasts an average elevation of 16,000 feet. For this reason, it's sometimes referred to as the "top of the world" or the "roof of the world." The Himalayas divide Tibet and its neighbor to the south, Nepal. This mountain range claims eight of the world's ten tallest mountains, including the highest, Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest). Both Tibet and Nepal possess vast geographical diversity and breathtaking landscapes. This has made them popular destinations for photographers from all over the world. All of the photos on this page were taken in Tibet and Nepal. |
