The Top of the World
Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small
opportunities surround us every day.
-- Sally Koch
The essence of religion is compassion and tolerance.  Kindness is my
true religion.  The proof of a person's love of God is if that person shows
love to fellow human beings.
-- H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama

Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth.  -- Buddha
Compassion is a keen awareness of the
interdependence of all things.
-- Thomas Merton
In music, in the sea, in a flower, in a leaf, in an act of kindness...
I see what people call God in all these things.
-- Pablo Casals
If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete.  -- Buddha
Photos above & below, Prayer Flags strung along mountain peaks in Tibet.
The flags are a tradition generally found only among Tibetan Buddhists and
contain messages filled with peace, hope, compassion, strength and
wisdom.  It's hoped that the words will be blown about by the wind and the
good will and compassion of the messages will benefit all people.  Just as
life moves on and is replaced by new life, the Tibetans renew their hopes
for the world by continually mounting new flags alongside the old.
It is the history of our kindnesses that alone make the world tolerable.  If it
were not for the effect of kindnesses, multiplying, spreading and bringing
forth benefits a thousand fold, I should be tempted to think that our life is a
practical joke in the worst possible spirit.
-- Robert Louis Stevenson
Once we believe, even for an instant, that there can be anything in the world
more important than compassion for a fellow human being, then there is no crime
against man that we cannot commit with an easy conscience.
-- Leo Tolstoy
As much as we need a prosperous economy, we also need a
prosperity of kindness and decency.
-- Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg
If you were arrested for kindness, would there be
enough evidence to convict you?
-- Bruno Yasendky
The crest of one distinguished family reads simply, "I serve," and no better motto can
be found.  We cannot determine whether our faces shall be beautiful or ugly, our
bodies graceful or deformed.  But the shaping of our lives is in our own hands.  We
make that great or small, noble or mean, as we will.
-- George Henry Hubbard
Compassion is a necessity, not a luxury.  Without it,
humanity cannot survive.
-- H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama
Tibet has the distinction of being the highest region on earth.  It sits atop the
Qinghai-Tibet plateau, and boasts an average elevation of 16,000 feet.  For this
reason, it's sometimes referred to as the "top of the world" or the "roof of the
world."  The Himalayas divide Tibet and its neighbor to the south, Nepal.  This
mountain range claims eight of the world's ten tallest mountains, including the
highest, Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest).  Both Tibet and Nepal possess vast
geographical diversity and breathtaking landscapes.  This has made them popular
destinations for photographers from all over the world.  All of the photos on this
page were taken in Tibet and Nepal.
Live for the cause that lacks assistance,
For the wrong that needs resistance,
For the future in the distance,
For the good that you can do.
-- G. Linnaeus Banks
